Vinegar Jones - Location
Please see the map and photos below
Bowness on Windermere is the most visited place in the Lake District. It's not hard to see why. It is the hub of the South Lake district area lying on the intersection of two of the busiest A roads. It has a good selection of shops and attractions such as the world famous Beatrix Potter exhibition.
It is also home to several large steamboat companies and has a multitude of berths for the yachting and pleasure boating fraternity. It boasts a successful yacht club with it’s own marina.
With so many people passing through by either car or boat Bowness has become a major tourist attraction.

At the heart of all this activity is Vinegar Jones. Where the A roads cross for a short stretch they share the same length of road and all of this traffic goes right past the shop. Whether you are coming in from Windermere village, Kendal, Ambleside, Newby Bridge, Coniston or Hawkshead (via the popular car ferry) you will use this stretch of road.
It also lies at the centre of the shopping routes. Pedestrians are walking right past the shop as they look at what they can buy in Bowness. The front door is on the main road (double fronted) and the rear is on the equally popular only pedestrianised shopping street in Bowness. You couldn’t find a better location for passing trade.
And as if that wasn’t enough, Vinegar Jones’ is just 200 yards from the busy lake frontage called the promenade. Thousands of tourists enjoy the steam boat experiences every summer’s day and most make their way right past the shop on their way to see Bowness.
Tourist activity in Bowness is not limited to just the summer season. It is now all year round. Day trippers, walkers, climbers, coach parties, sailors and long-weekenders. The list is endless and has led to the Lakes being a 12-month-a-year attraction.
These factors account for the very successful trading conditions experienced by this business.
